Blue Heron (Juvenile) at Holey Land WMA

"Juvenile Blue Heron at HoleyLand Wildlife Management Area"

This is a photograph of a juvenile Blue Heron taken at the Holey Land Wildlife Management Area. This WMA is located on Okeechobee Road (US27) at the boundary of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The gear that was used in this Blue Heron photo was a Nikon D90 attached to a Tamron 28-300mm lens and Tamron 2x teleconverter.

The Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the West Indies and the Galápagos Islands. The  Blue Heron is found throughout most of North America, as far north as Alaska and the southern Canadian provinces. The range extends south through Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean to South America. Birds east of the Rocky Mountains in the northern part of their range are migratory and winter in Central America or northern South America. From the southern United States southwards, and on the Pacific coast, they are year-round residents.  However their hardiness is such that individuals often remain through cold northern winters, as well.

The Blue Heron can be found in a range of habitats, in fresh and saltwater marshes, mangrove swamps, flooded meadows, lake edges, or shorelines, but always close to bodies of water, usually nesting in trees or bushes.

I adore herons. They often try and come near my pond but when a heron approaches all the crows, magpies and my wild doves seem to team up to scare him off. I saw a lot of birds in the Galapagos but not herons.Blue-footed boobies! I love wildlife and travel, my passion.

The crows, Maggie’s and doves are quite territorial so no wonder! lol
      Good luck on your enterprise.
