WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY – BIG CYPRESS WMA, FL
This photograph of a Great Pondhawk dragonfly was taken in the Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades, Florida using a Nikon D80 with a Nikkor 60mm lens.
The Great Pondhawk (Erythemis vesiculosa) is a tropical pondhawk dragonfly that can be found along the southern border areas of the United States. In the central parts of the United States, it can be found from the Lower Rio Grande Valley and Southeastern Texas along the Gulf Coast region, sometimes migrating further north to Oklahoma. Males and females look similar, although the male has darker markings on the abdomen between the green markings. The thorax is a bright lime green.
Like other pondhawks, they prefer slow or still water habitats.
