Anhinga atop a Tree

"Anhinga atop Tree at Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area"

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY – BIG CYPRESS WMA, FL

This is a photo of an Anhinga atop a tree a taken at the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area (729,000 acres) off of Alligator Alley (I-75) in Collier County, Florida. The gear used in this  bird photo was a Nikon D90 camera body attached to a Tamron 28-300mm lens and Tamron 2x teleconverter. The subject was photographed from a distance of almost 100 feet away.

The anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) is a fairly large bird with a long S-shaped neck and a long pointed bill.  The male Anhinga has grayish-black feathers with a greenish shine to them.  Anhinga’s have large wings with silver-white feathers on the top side.  Female anhinga’s have a light tan head, neck and chest and a black stomach. Both the male and the female anhinga have long fan- shaped tail feathers and sometimes the anhinga is known as the water turkey. The anhinga has poorly developed oil glands and its feathers aren’t as waterproof as other water birds are.  It will perch in a tree with its wings open to dry its feathers and warm its body.
