Photographed above is a Mallow scrub Hairstreak Butterfly captured at Enchanted Forest Park in North Miami, Florida off of NE135th Street. The gear used for this photograph is a Nikon D90 camera body attached to a Nikkor 60mm 2.8 lens and a macro light ring for additional lighting.

The Mallow scrub Hairstreak butterfly (Strymon columella) is in the Gossamer-wing family of butterflies. It grows to be about 1″ and is colored gray-brown when seen from above. Its trailing edge of the hindwings are tinged blue. When viewed from below, the Mallow scrub Hairstreak butterfly is grayish, crossed with broken dark spots, and has an orange and black eyespot near the tail.

The habitat for the Mallow scrub Hairstreak butterfly is fields and scrub, and its food plants are mallows, hence its name.
