This is a photograph of a Blue Dasher Dragonfly that was taken using a Nikon D90 camera body attached to a 60mm 2.8 AF Micro Nikkor lens. The subject location was Enchanted Forest Park.

The Blue Dasher Dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis) grows to a length of approximately 1 1/3 inches. The thorax of the Blue Dasher Dragonfly is striped black and greenish yellow. The abdomen of these insects are pale blue with a black tip. Female Blue Dasher dragonflies have two broken yellow lines. The face of these dasher’s are creamy, with usually green eyes. It’s wings are mostly clear.

The Blue Dasher is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is common and widely distributed in the United States. This species is found from southern British Columbia east to Ontario, extending south through the U.S. from southern California east to Florida. It also occurs in the Bahamas. In  Idaho, it can be found throughout the state at lower elevations, usually below 3000 feet (914 meters). Mature males develop a bluish-white pruinescence on the back of the abdomen and, in western individuals, on the thorax.

This species is found from southern British Columbia east to Ontario, extending south through the U.S. from southern California east to Florida. These insects  occur in the Bahamas. In Idaho, these dragonflies can be found throughout the state at lower elevations, usually below 3000 feet (914 meters). The habitat of the Blue Dasher dragonfly is ponds, marshy areas, and sluggish streams.
