WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY – BIG CYPRESS WMA, FL

This is a photograph of a Scarlet Skimmer Dragonfly that was taken at the 729,000 acre Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area in Collier County, Florida off of Alligator Alley (I-75). The camera gear used in this photo was a Nikon D90 body attached to a Nikkor 60mm 2.8 lens and a macro light ring.

The Scarlet Skimmer Dragonfly (Crocothemis servilia) grows to a length of 1 5/8 inches. The male Scarlet Skimmer Dragonfly is entirely bright red, while the female and juveniles are mostly yellowish. The abdomen has a black stripe above. The wings of the Scarlet Skimmer Dragonfly are transparent, with an amber spot at its hindwings base. The Scarlet Skimmer Dragonfly was originally introduced from Asia, and its habitat is wetlands and fields.
