"Tropical Checkered Skipper Butterfly at Enchanted Forest Park"

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY – ENCHANTED FOREST PARK, FL

The photograph featured above is that of a Tropical Checkered Skipper Butterfly. It was captured in a beautiful park in the middle of North Miami, Florida  named Enchanted Forest Park,  using a Nikon D90 camera body, a Tamron 2x teleconverter and a Nikkor 60mm 2.8 lens. This park is a haven for those interested in insect macrophotography.

The Tropical Checkered Skipper (Pyrgus oileus) grows to about 1 1/4 inch and is slate brown when viewed above, with numerous creamy colored spots. The male has conspicuous bluish-gray hair-like scales. When it is viewed from below, it is tan with dark brown and gray spots that are outlined in black. It is commonly seen in open areas and feeds on Mallows and Hollyhock.
