WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY – HOLEY LAND WMA, FL

Photograph taken of a Red-Tailed Hawk at Holey Land Wildlife Management Area at the Broward County/Palm Beach County border on US 27 (Okeechobee Road). The camera used was a Nikon D90 with a Tamron 28-300mm lens and a 2x teleconverter. The hawk was approximately 50 feet up a utility pole. The red-tailed hawk is a common raptor to this area.

The Red-tailed Hawk is a large, highly variable hawk with brown upperparts, head and throat. The underparts are pale with brown streaks. Wings are pale below with dark bar at leading edge and dark tips. The tail is red-brown with dark terminal band. Legs and feet are yellow. This hawk soars on thermals and air updrafts.

Range and Habitat: The Red-tailed Hawk is found in Alaska and Canada south to Panama. It is usually found in open country, woodlands, prairie groves, mountains, plains, farmlands, and roadsides.

      Alan, very sharp view for that hawk. As its name red-tailed, people might expect to see its tail.
